My top 10 Prints and posters of 2014

Here is the list of prints and posters that I think are top notch for 2014. Some I own and the ones I don't, I want to own. Since a few prints from some private commision groups weren't done yet I couln't not post here. A certain Evil Dead print I had in mind to make the list.

Edit: I just realized I own all these prints. I have a problem

Ken Taylor's Alice in Wonderland print was part of the Mondo Nothing's Impossible Gallery event. There were some good piece in the show but for me this was the best of them all. The color is person are so vibrant and work very well together. AiW is one of my all time favorite disney movies so this print was a must have for my collection.

One of the first solo shows for Mondo of 2014 was Laurent Durieux. His solo show was announced at the Mondo Mystery Movie which I was lucky enough to be at. You could tell people weren't to excited about the poster Durieux did for MMMXI. After his solo show a few months later his work started commanding higher prices. His Forbidden Planet poster isn't his most commercially successful from his solo show but by far my favorite.

2014 I started changing my taste in prints. I have been getting into more and more art prints as appose to Movie prints. Eelus's Summoning on the right was a big reason. I was lucky enough to be in the amazing commission group that made this print possible. With the success of Summoning Eelus created Conjuring on the right. I had fast hand on the day of the Conjuring drop and scored one. Really excited to own this set. One of my priorities is to frame these two prints.

    Blade Runner!!!

I got insanely lucky on this mondo drop. I was lucky enough to score the variant and the reg! This is a bit of a stretch since I haven't seen this print in person yet, but it makes my list. Horkey is amazing. Need to get his Pan's Labyrinth print this year.

My first Roamcouch was this print Revolution and Rainbow Inc./Brooklyn Bridge. The above is my favorite of the two.

Equity was my first Chuck Sperry big purchase. I grabbed the wood edition of 25 at the Pop Époque – The Art of Chuck Sperry Art Show at Firehouse 8. I had the pleasure of talking to him about this print. He said he wanted to make something that was a little more affordable for everyone. The cost was $300 but compared to some other prints not a bad deal.

Laurent Durieux's Back to the Future series is pretty damn good! I stood in line at Mondo-Con longer then I care to say for the BttF 3 Variant.  Anyone want to trade their Bttf 1&2 Variants for my reg set?

Now local artist to me Ben Eine! First print of his and it is so amazing in person. Printed on hand torn paper with a glossy finish. I may need to frame this in 2015.

From the same show as the Alice in Wonderland this was my second favorite. Rich Kelly's Sword in the Stone. Im pretty happy to have been able to sore both the prints I wanted from that show for a decent price. I picked this one up as an AP from Kelly's site.

WTF Happend to Movie Posters

IF (get it? Thats a big if, hence the capitalization? no? okay bad joke) you have ever accidentally somehow come across this blog you know I collect movie posters. Not the lame ones in the video below but soem really awesome ones from some bad ass artists like Ken Taylor or Tyler Stout. I would have to agree with this 100% with the exception of this poster I have on my wall pictured below.

www.goodbadflicks.com I take a look at just how lazy movie posters have become.

I was lucky enough to attend this show that featured Ken Taylor and Tyler Stout at the Mondo gallery in April of 2013. When I finally got inside the gallery after many hours of wait this piece with one of Stouts (made the list) were the ones I was really excited about. The metallic look amazing in person and the detail is spot on.     Artist: Ken Taylor Size: 15”x36” Printed by:   Details:   Run size: 205 (Variant)

As mention above I went to the Tyler Stout/Ken taylor Mondo gallery opening. When I was inside and turned the corner to see this in person I fell in love with it. In my opinion one of Stout best and most underrated prints. The colors are spot on, I love the glow in the dark teeth and the composition is great! If you haven't seen this movie do so, then buy this print!     Artist: Tyler Stout Size: 36”x24” Printed by: D&L Screenprinting   c Details:  7 Color Screenprint  with glow inks/    Run size: 290

This is the only print I do not own in this list ( I do own the Regular version Variant shown). When I first saw this print I thought "That is insane!" I thought the 2 dollar bill (Thats what I call it, probaly no one else) was one of the best posters I have seen in a long time. Horkey has fast risen to the top of my favorite artist. His Pan's Labyrinth, Lord of the rings prints (scored a Two Towers) Dead man are some of the best detailed prints out there. I will own this one day, oh yes it will be mine!     Artist: Aaron Horkey Size: 18.25”x39” Printed by:   Details:   Run size: 200

This Taxi Driver poster was Mondo screening exclusive in Austin Texas. A friend and I bought two tickets to this but had no clue how to get out to Austin in time. I had a friend that lived there and we asked if he would go in our place and send us the posters. All it took was the promise of some beers during the movie and we were set. This is definitely one of those posters that look a lot better in person ( I say that a lot). Glad I was lucky to have a good friend get it for me.     Artist: Martin Ansin Size: 36”x24” Printed by:   Details:   Run size: 405

For me personally, 50's movie posters like a lot of Reynold Brown's work are what got me into movie posters. Larger than life characters and crazy monsters. Francesco nailed it 100% here! Francesco in my book has some of the best titles and lettering in this group. The color way is amazing and the yellow titles feels like a throwback to the 1950's movie posters. I love this print!

I might be cheating but Im grouping these as one since I think they compliment each other. I didn't get to go to the gallery show for this series but I wish I could have. Amazing detail and who doesn't love the Universal Monsters and Bela Lugosi!     Artist: Jason Edmiston Size: 18”x24” each Printed by:   Details:   Run size: 175 each

Here is a poster I will always regret passing on and not making an attempt to get. I always wanted an awesome Jaws poster and for some reason when this came up I wasn't crazy about it. I thought it was good but figured I would pass and maybe make a good trade for it later. Man do I regret that decision. the more I look at this print the more I like it. This captures the travel poster in a perfect way. It has the feel of a Roger Broders ' travel print but Durieux's style still comes through. Another poster I will have in the future! Durieux is having a gallery show at Mondo February 7th 2014. I can almost bet that the Forbidden Planet print will be on my 2014 list. Im also hoping that the Back to the Future one will be as well.     Artist: Laurent Durieux Size: 36”x24” Printed by:   Details:   Run size: 525

Tim Doyle released a 9 run series of Bernie Wrightson Frankenstein prints. I subscribed to the series and received all of the and they do not disappoint! The fine detail in some of these prints are on a whole other level! The exclusive print Perished on the Scaffold is chilling.     Artist: Bernie Wrightson Size: 36”x24” Printed by:   Details:  130lb Cougar Natural Cover Run size: 200

Reynold Brown, amazing poster designer

I bid on this amazing poster by Reynold Brown but did not win.

House on Haunted Hill (1959)

Reynold Brown is probably one of my favorite poster artist.  Reynold's worked in a time when his posters where almost always better/bigger than the movie. The monsters where never as big or gruesome as the posters depicted. You probably have never heard of him, but you definitely have seen his work. I've posted a few of his posters below.

The Brain That Wouldn't Die

The Brain that Wouldn't Die is a pretty good flick.  I'm not sure if I was just in the right mood but I really enjoyed the movie. Yes her body is under the table with a hole for her head but its still a good movie.

Stephen Fishler

If/when I win the lottery I will be hassling this guy to sell his Frankenstein 6 sheet! Rarest of all movie posters! Stephen Fishler fell ass backwards into it. Jealous!

Cool little story of how the most rare movie poster was discovered.

Metropolis CEO Stephen Fishler discusses his extraordinary find of the sole surviving six-sheet poster from the original 1931 Frankenstein. Visit us at www.metropoliscomics.com
